This blog is meant to share what’s happening all over the Upstate Medical University campus, from the halls of academia, to the research laboratories and throughout the patient treatment areas of the hospitals. Jim Howe’s reporting and editing background includes more than two decades at the Syracuse Post-Standard and a master’s degree in journalism from Syracuse University. He writes on a variety of topics for Upstate’s quarterly magazines, Upstate Health and Cancer Care, and also assists with Upstate’s weekly radio show, “HealthLink on Air.” He has a wide range of personal interests, including history, food, travel, photography, pursuing his next black belt in mixed martial arts and hearing about the world of medicine from family members in the field.

Amber Smith is a 25-year veteran journalist who covered this institution during her tenure at Syracuse’s daily newspaper, The Post-Standard. Early in her career, she worked as a volunteer paramedic. Later, she earned a master’s degree in Health Services Management and Policy. She edits Upstate’s quarterly consumer health publications, Upstate Health and Cancer Care, and oversees the weekly talk radio show, “HealthLink on Air.”
